Drama Awards’ past Daesang winners

The Drama Awards hosted by the tv networks were not always the popularity contest that they seem to be today. Of course, the success of the drama was important in deciding whether an actor would receive an award. (Many of the Daesang winners came from those who starred in the highest-rated TV dramas.) But just as equally important was the actual acting talent displayed by the actor in the drama. You don’t believe me? Look at the past Daesang (Grand Prize) winners below, and see how they read like a list of the acting powerhouses of Korea.

I remember the exact point when this started to change, and I mostly blame SBS for taking the lead in making the change. It first happened in 1998 when SBS awarded Kim Hee Sun the Daesang for her role in the wildly popular drama series Mister Q. Umm, yup, that’s right – Kim Hee Sun! I don’t think I need to elaborate further on why this was so very wrong. The second milestone happened in 2001 when SBS awarded the Daesang to both Kang Soo Yeon and Jeon In Hwa, and thereby setting the precedent for having multiple Daesang recipients in a given year.

With earnest desire that there be no further crazy outcomes happening at the Drama Awards shows this year and at those to come (at least in the Daesang category), here is a complete list of all the past Drama Awards Daesang winners.

hope you have a great holiday! thanks for this list …it used to be the most exciting moments for me to hear who earned the daesang .and i was so happy that year for go do shim who took two daesang among the three stations! .and kim myung min win at KBS make me teared together with him on that night ! MGY win was something more emotional because i feel so much for her acting in painter of the wind (despite the drama going out of track towards the end) .i know she was so young and still have a long way to go before she should touch the daesang but that time .i teared as she cried on stage also . the past winners are names to be remembered ..yet now .i dun even really care too much since it is just a game sigh~ but still there will be winners i think truly deserved it .and i hope they win this year and i also hope the tv stations can do miracles for once and do justice again to the daesang

    Oh good lord
I just got thru telling bella I missed out on a lot of dramas then I clicked on this
and looked thru the list going ” wow these titles are funny” then as I neared the end I realized I only saw one drama out of the whole list! My name is Kim Sam soon
The only other one I can count as sort of watched is lovers in Paris while they were in Paris – lost interest in the last half. All this time I thought lee seung gi got the daesang for brilliant legacy and lee min ho for bof- boy was I wrong.
What you wrote reminds me of the academy awards and how I feel about some questionable winners. Guess award ceremonies are the same in every country – some losers end up winning and some great actors end up losing – making you wonder what the judges were smokin that year.
Great job blue for researching all these names and shows.
Kim hee sun is one of the very few Korean names I learned so I could avoid her work. I saw just brief clips of her acting and I still have nightmares about it. Same for kim tae hee, I heard her speaking English on lawyers in harvard and my ears have yet to forgive me for subjecting them to that 3 minute clip.

What an interesting post especially seeing how many actors have won a daesang and then also seeing how many have won multiple daesangs.

Out of this long list, these are the shows I saw. (in dubbed versions, no less!)
Hwang Jin Yi, Miss Mermaid, Dae Jang Geum, My Name is Kim Sam Soon, Jumong, Legend, All In, Lovers in Prague
Ah, I remember the time I didn’t give damn whether the translation of dialogues are right, or if the name Eun-suh ended up being Jenny and Song-joo to Cholo. LOLOLOL
